A special exhibition telling the story of the arrival of the Great Western Railway in Broadway, its influence on the local community and the people who worked on the line, opens at the Broadway Museum & Art Gallery on 8th August.
The station today is the northern terminus of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, which runs 14 miles through glorious Cotswold countryside to Cheltenham Racecourse. The new building is a close replica of the original Great Western Railway design of 1904 and was formally opened by Lord Faulkner of Worcester in 2018.
The arrival of the railway brought significant social changes to Broadway. It spelt an end to horse-drawn coaches, opened up the village to tourism, enabled local people to travel faster and more safely to destinations throughout the UK and allowed the ready transport of goods and livestock to and from the area.
The exhibition follows this story through the roles of the railway staff, from the earliest days of the railway to the station’s closure in 1960 and eventual closure of the railway by British Railways in 1976. A small group of volunteers from the railway’s museum team put the exhibition together.
